What African Alchemy Actually Was

People look for African alchemy in the wrong place. They look for a library — manuscripts, diagrams, a sealed tradition of secret books. They find no European equivalent and decide there was nothing there.

That search fails twice. It misses what Africa actually has, which is a furnace, a smith, and a strict rule about who may approach fire. And it misses the plainest fact in the whole history of the subject: the oldest surviving book of alchemy in the world was written in Egypt, by an Egyptian, in Africa.

This is a long article, and it quotes its sources at length rather than in fragments. That is deliberate. The argument here has been made badly so often — by overreach on one side and by omission on the other — that the only honest way to make it is to put the documents on the table and let you read them.

Start With What Alchemy Is

Strip away the gold and the mystique and alchemy is four things at once. A substance is changed by fire. The change follows ritual rules. Only an initiated specialist may attempt it. And the work is understood to act on the practitioner as much as on the material.

The word itself settles nothing. English alchemy comes from the Arabic al-kīmiyā'. Before that the trail forks. One reading takes it from the Greek khēmeia, from a verb meaning to pour — the art of fusing metals. The other takes it from Coptic kēme, from the ancient Egyptian kmt, Kemet — in which case al-kīmiyā' means something like the Egyptian science.

Both readings have serious scholars behind them and neither has won. So this article does not rest on the word. It rests on documents. But the second reading opens onto a question that has to be settled before anything else can be said: who were the people of Kemet?

Who the People of Kemet Were

In the African-centred scholarship of Cheikh Anta Diop, Kemet means the land of the Black people — the name a people gave themselves and their country. Western Egyptology later narrowed the word to "the black land", tying it to the dark silt the Nile laid down each flood. The soil is real and it mattered. But the name belonged to the people first, and the soil reading is the later gloss.

This is not one scholar's opinion standing against a consensus. It is a position that UNESCO examined and then put its name to.

In January 1974 UNESCO convened a symposium in Cairo on the peopling of ancient Egypt. Twenty specialists came from Europe, America and Africa, most of them Egyptologists. Cheikh Anta Diop and Théophile Obenga presented the case that the Egyptians were Black Africans. The symposium's general conclusion, as printed in UNESCO's own General History of Africa, records what happened when that case met the room:

"In the general conclusion to the report it was stated that: 'Although the preparatory working paper sent out by Unesco gave particulars of what was desired, not all participants had prepared communications comparable with the painstakingly researched contributions of Professors Cheikh Anta Diop and Obenga. There was consequently a real lack of balance in the discussions'. A new page of African historiography was accordingly written in Cairo."

Read that carefully, because it is easy to take the wrong way. The imbalance it names is not a fault in Diop and Obenga. It is a finding against the rest of the room. Two African scholars had done the work. The Egyptologists arrived without anything comparable to answer it with.

And on the record, the Egyptologists gave ground. Jean Vercoutter was the man UNESCO had commissioned to write the symposium's own introductory report. The same volume records his position:

"Professor Vercoutter, who had been commissioned by Unesco to write the introductory report, acknowledged after a thorough discussion that the conventional idea that the Egyptian population was equally divided between blacks, whites and half-castes could not be upheld. 'Professor Vercoutter agreed that no attempt should be made to estimate percentages, which meant nothing, as it was impossible to establish them without reliable statistical data'. On the subject of Egyptian culture: 'Professor Vercoutter remarked that, in his view, Egypt was African in its way of writing, in its culture and in its way of thinking'. Professor Leclant, for his part, 'recognized the same African character in the Egyptian temperament and way of thinking'."

The symposium did not put the question to a vote. It recommended further study of the concept of race itself. But what UNESCO did next is the verdict. When it published the volume of its General History of Africa covering ancient civilisations, Chapter 1 — "Origin of the Ancient Egyptians" — was written by Cheikh Anta Diop, and the symposium report was printed as an annex to his chapter. The official history of ancient Africa opens with Diop.

So when the Egyptians of the pharaonic age are discussed in this article, that is who is meant: Africans, living where their ancestors had lived. Nobody came from anywhere.

The Greeks Said Where They Got It

Kemet was unified around 3100 BCE. By the time any Greek arrived, it was more ancient to them than the Roman Empire is to us. And the Greeks who came did not pretend otherwise. They said, in writing, that the things they were proudest of had come from Egypt.

Herodotus travelled in Egypt around 450 BCE and gave the whole second book of his Histories to it. On religion, he is direct:

"They said moreover that the Egyptians were the first who brought into use appellations for the twelve gods and the Hellenes took up the use from them; and that they were the first who assigned altars and images and temples to the gods, and who engraved figures on stones."

On the gods themselves, he goes further, and he tells you how he knows:

"the naming of almost all the gods has come to Hellas from Egypt: for that it has come from the Barbarians I find by inquiry is true"

And on the public forms of worship:

"Moreover, it is true also that the Egyptians were the first of men who made solemn assemblies and processions and approaches to the temples, and from them the Hellenes have learnt them."

That is a Greek, in the fifth century BCE, telling Greeks that these things were Egyptian before they were Greek — that Greece had learned them, not invented them. He does not present it as a scandal. "I find by inquiry is true" is the voice of a man reporting what any educated person would confirm.

Four centuries later, Diodorus Siculus gave the fuller account, and it is the passage that matters most, because it names names and says what the evidence was. He is reporting what the Egyptian priests told him from their own records:

"the priests of Egypt recount from the records of their sacred books that they were visited in early times by Orpheus, Musaeus, Melampus, and Daedalus, also by the poet Homer and Lycurgus of Sparta, later by Solon of Athens and the philosopher Plato, and that there also came Pythagoras of Samos and the mathematician Eudoxus, as well as Democritus of Abdera and Oenopides of Chios. As evidence for the visits of all these men they point in some cases to their statues and in others to places or buildings which bear their names, and they offer proofs from the branch of learning which each one of these men pursued, arguing that all the things for which they were admired among the Greeks were transferred from Egypt."

Twelve names. And then Diodorus goes through what each one took, and the specificity is the striking thing. This is not vague homage. It is an itemised account.

"Lycurgus also and Plato and Solon, they say, incorporated many Egyptian customs into their own legislation. And Pythagoras learned from Egyptians his teachings about the gods, his geometrical propositions and theory of numbers, as well as the transmigration of the soul into every living thing. Democritus also, as they assert, spent five years among them and was instructed in many matters relating to astrology. Oenopides likewise passed some time with the priests and astrologers and learned among other things about the orbit of the sun, that it has an oblique course and moves in a direction opposite to that of the other stars. Like the others, Eudoxus studied astrology with them and acquired a notable fame for the great amount of useful knowledge which he disseminated among the Greeks."

Read the Pythagoras sentence again. Geometry. The theory of numbers. The transmigration of the soul. Those are the pillars of what later gets called Greek philosophy, and a Greek historian, citing Egyptian records, attributes all three to Egypt.

Diodorus was not the first to say it. Isocrates, writing in the fourth century BCE — close enough to Pythagoras to matter — says in the Busiris that Pythagoras went to Egypt, studied the religion of the people there, and was the first to bring philosophy to the Greeks. Strabo, visiting Heliopolis, says he was shown where Plato and Eudoxus had lodged. Plato's own writing keeps returning to Egypt: in the Timaeus an Egyptian priest tells Solon that the Greeks are children with no long memory; in the Phaedrus the god Theuth — Thoth — invents writing; in the Laws Egyptian art is praised for holding its form across ten thousand years.

Modern historians argue over how much of this is biography and how much is later Greeks attaching Egypt to their heroes for the prestige. That dispute is real and unsettled. But the argument survives either verdict. If the journeys happened, Greek philosophy was schooled in Africa. If they were embroidered, then Greek and Roman writers spent seven hundred years agreeing that the highest thing you could say about a thinker was that he had studied in Egypt — and you do not invent an African education for your own philosophers if you hold that culture beneath you. The debt was real, or the prestige was. Egypt is the senior partner in both readings, on the testimony of the people who came after.

What changed later is not the evidence. It is who was doing the telling.

Why a Greek Book Was Written in Upper Egypt

The traffic Herodotus and Diodorus describe became permanent. Alexander took Egypt in 332 BCE. His general Ptolemy founded a dynasty that ruled from Alexandria for three hundred years and built there the Museum and the Library — the largest concentration of scholars in the ancient Mediterranean, sitting in Africa. Greek became the working language of learning in Egypt. Egyptian priests and Greek philosophers were in the same cities, reading each other, for ten generations.

Rome annexed Egypt in 30 BCE and nothing about the intellectual arrangement changed. Alexandria stayed the centre. Greek stayed the language of scholarship.

So by 300 CE, a scholar at Akhmim in Upper Egypt writing technical Greek is not an anomaly and not an import. He is the product of six hundred years in which Egypt was where you went to learn, and Greek was what you wrote in when you got there. Calling his work "Greek alchemy" describes the language. It does not describe the address.

The Oldest Book of Alchemy Was Written in Egypt

Zosimos of Panopolis worked around 300 CE. Panopolis is Akhmim, in Upper Egypt. He is the first alchemical author we can name whose work survives in any quantity. His books were called Cheirokmeta — things made by hand.

Read what he actually wrote. This is the opening of the Visions, in Joshua Werrett's translation from his 2024 Oxford doctoral edition, which is open access and linked below:

"The composition of the waters, and their movement, and growth, and physical dissolution, and physical restitution, and the separation of soul from body, and the coming-together of soul and body are not processes which are all of different and foreign natures to each other, but are actually one process, of one single nature, acting only on itself, which includes both the firm husks of metals and the sappy fluids of plants."

Stop on that sentence. It is doing something specific. Zosimos is saying that what happens to metal in a vessel and what happens to a soul leaving a body are not two subjects. They are one process, described twice. That is the whole psychological reading of alchemy — the one Jung spent thirty years building — stated plainly, in Egypt, around 300 CE.

Then the text turns into a dream, and it is worth reading whole:

"And, saying these things, I took a nap, and I saw a certain sacrificial priest standing in front of me and over an altar, shaped like an alembic. That altar had fifteen steps leading up to it. The priest stood there, and I heard a voice from above which said to me: 'I have completed my descent of the fifteen steps which radiate darkness, and my ascent of the steps which shine brightly. And this here priest is the one who has made me new, throwing away the great heaviness of my body; and I, having been made holy by force, have finally become a spirit'. Having heard the voice of the man who stood in the Crucibaltar, I interrogated him, wishing to know who he might be. And he, speaking with a weary voice, replied to me: 'I am Ion, priest of the inner sanctuaries, and I have endured an unbearable act of violence. Around dawn, a man came towards me at full speed and took me prisoner, dismembering me with his sword, and he ripped me apart according to the rigour of harmony. And, having flayed my head with the sword wielded by him, he crushed up my bones together with my flesh, and he burned it in the fire, which was close at hand, until, transforming in my body, I learned to become a spirit. And this was that unbearable act of violence'."

A priest is dismembered on an altar shaped like a still. He is burned. He is remade. He becomes spirit. And Zosimos presents this as instruction in how to work metal — the altar is an alembic, the fifteen steps are the stages of the operation.

You do not need Jung to see what that is. It is the nigredo — the darkening, the dissolution, the destruction that has to happen before anything new — and it is sitting in the earliest alchemical document we possess, written by an Egyptian, sixteen centuries before depth psychology existed as a discipline. Jung read Zosimos and wrote about him. He did not invent this. He recognised it.

How It Reached Europe, With Dates

So the question people usually ask backwards — did African alchemy influence European alchemy — has a documented answer. Yes.

Greek-language alchemy is written in Roman Egypt. What survives of Zosimos survives partly through Syriac and Arabic translation. Arabic scholarship carries and develops the corpus for centuries. Then it crosses into Latin, and the crossing has a date: Robert of Chester finished the first Latin translation of an Arabic alchemical work at Segovia on 11 February 1144. The book is the Liber de compositione alchemiae.

Ahmad Y. al-Hassan traced that Latin text back to its Arabic original — a dialogue attributed to the Umayyad prince Khalid ibn Yazid and a monk named Maryanus. The route is Egypt, then Arabic, then Latin. Europe did not invent alchemy, and it did not receive it directly from Greece. It received it from Africa, through Arabic hands, more than eight centuries after Zosimos was working at Akhmim. (al-Hassan, 2004, Arabic Sciences and Philosophy)

None of this is a contested claim. It is the standard account in the history of science. The reason it can sound like a new argument is the habit of filing Egypt somewhere other than Africa — a feature of the map, not a finding about the evidence.

Europe's alchemy has an African address and an Arabic passport. The paperwork survives.

An African Scholar Who Thought It Was Nonsense

Here the story gets more interesting than a straight line of inheritance.

Ibn Khaldūn was born in Tunis in 1332. In the Muqaddimah he gives alchemy a chapter, and the heading tells you where he is going. In Franz Rosenthal's translation: "A denial of the effectiveness of alchemy. The impossibility of its existence. The harm that arises from practicing it."

He opens on motive, not theory:

"Many people who are unable to earn their living are led by greed to cultivate alchemy. They are of the opinion that it is a proper means and method of making a living and that the practitioners of alchemy find it easier and simpler than other people to acquire property. In fact, however, they have to pay for their efforts in the form of trouble, hardship, and difficulties, and in the form of persecution by the authorities and loss of property through expenditures. In addition, he loses standing and, eventually, when his secret is discovered, faces ruin."

He knows the literature. He has read it, he names it, and he is unimpressed by the way it is written. He even records his own teacher's verdict:

"They pass these books around among themselves and discuss the meaning and interpretation of the puzzling expressions and secrets in them. For the most part, they are like riddles. Such books are the Seventy Treatises of Jabir b. Hayyan, the Rutbat al-hakim of Maslamah al-Majriti, the works of at-Tughra'i, and the very well-composed poem of al-Mughayribi, and similar works. However, after all these efforts, the alchemists do not get anywhere. I once discussed something of the sort with our teacher, the leading Spanish scholar, Abul-Barakat al-Ballafiqi. I called his attention to a certain work on alchemy. He examined it for a long time, then returned it to me and said: 'I guarantee it to the author that he will come home a failure'."

Then he applies a test that would not look out of place in a modern journal. He asks whether anyone has actually seen the thing work:

"They tell stories about other alchemists who attained the goal of alchemy or were successful. They are satisfied with listening to these stories and discussing them. They have no suspicions as to whether or not they can be considered true. They are like people who are infatuated with something and taken in by fanciful stories about the subject of their infatuation. When they are asked whether the story has been verified by actual observation, they do not know. They say, 'We have heard about it, but have not seen it.' This has been the case with alchemists in every age and of every race."

That is an empirical standard, stated in the fourteenth century, in North Africa. Hearsay is not evidence. Show me the observation. It is the same standard this article is trying to hold itself to.

He is careful, too, about where the real disagreement lies. He sets out the dispute among the philosophers — al-Fārābī and the Spanish school holding that the seven metals are one species differing only in qualities such as colour, hardness and moisture; Ibn Sīnā and the eastern school holding that each is a distinct species in its own right — and he sees that everything hangs on which is true. If the metals are one species, transmutation is at least thinkable. If they are separate species, it is not. This is a man arguing about the structure of matter, not waving his hands at superstition.

And he had a working sense of fraud. He describes forgers who plate silver with gold, or blanch copper with mercury sublimate until it passes for silver to anyone but an expert assayer, and then coin money with it. His verdict on them is flat: they are thieves, or worse than thieves.

Now hold Ibn Khaldūn next to Zosimos. Both African. A thousand years apart. One founds the tradition; one takes it apart with an evidential argument. That range — a discipline and its own internal critic — is what a mature intellectual culture looks like. You do not get a serious refutation of something nobody serious is doing.

How the Greek Reading Became the Default

Now the etymology question can be answered properly, because the answer has a name and a date.

Marcellin Berthelot was one of the most powerful chemists in France — and, unusually, he had also trained in philology and oriental languages at the Collège de France. In 1885 he published Les origines de l'alchimie, and between 1887 and 1888 he edited and translated the Collection des anciens alchimistes grecs, which became the standard edition of the Greek alchemical texts. Both are linked below; both are in the public domain.

Berthelot's authority did the rest. He derived al-kīmiyā' from the Greek khēmeia, and because he was simultaneously the chemist and the editor of the source texts, that reading became the default in European scholarship and largely stayed there.

Notice what happened across about twenty-three centuries. Herodotus, a Greek, said plainly that Greece took from Egypt. Diodorus, a Greek, itemised the debt. By the late nineteenth century the standard European account had the story beginning with the Greeks. That shift is visible in the sources themselves. It is not a suspicion; it is a change you can date.

I am not claiming Berthelot falsified anything. He was a serious scholar working with the texts that survived, and most of the surviving alchemical texts are in Greek. But which texts survive, and which language they are in, is a fact about transmission and not about origin. A Greek-language corpus produced in Roman Egypt tells you what language educated people wrote in. It does not tell you where the practice came from.

So: the etymology should be demoted, not defended. Alchemy is not a word. It is a practice. And the practice has an address.

The Furnace and the Smith

All of that is the written thread. Alongside it runs something older and far more widespread, and this is the part earlier writing on this site missed entirely, because it was looking for books.

Shadreck Chirikure, a Zimbabwean archaeologist, gives the standard account in Metals in Past Societies (2015). African iron smelting was governed, not merely performed. Furnaces were commonly built in the form of a body and spoken of in those terms. Medicines were placed inside them. Smelters observed restrictions during a smelt, including sexual abstinence. The outcome was described as a birth. Chirikure and colleagues have since traced ore sources and smelting sites in detail across southern Africa. Suzanne Childs and David Killick, reviewing the field in the Annual Review of Anthropology, describe the same pattern across a wide range of societies. When an African archaeologist and an American review journal agree, you are looking at the practice rather than at anyone's interpretation of it.

And the vocabulary is old. Pierre de Maret and F. Nsuka, working on comparative Bantu linguistics, place the words for smithing deep in the shared inheritance. The practice travelled with the language, over millennia. It was not picked up from outside.

The Smith Was Not a Tradesman

In Mande societies across Mali and its neighbours, the blacksmith — the numu — does far more than work metal. He carves the ritual objects. He heals. He divines. He leads the Komo, a men's association whose knowledge is closed.

Patrick McNaughton served as an apprentice to the smith Sedu Traore in Mali in 1978. He records why one man holds all of that. The reason is nyama. It is a force let loose by any act that changes the nature of a thing. Nyama is held to be truly dangerous. The smith's inherited standing is what lets him handle it and come to no harm.

To change the nature of a substance is to release something that can injure you. Only certain people may do it. The work marks the one who does it.

Read that against European alchemy and the correspondence is exact. Not similar — exact. Transformation is hazardous. It requires initiation. It changes the one who performs it. The difference is that in Mali this was a working practice with living practitioners, while in Europe it became a literature.

And here we have to be disciplined, because this is where a good argument gets ruined by overreach. There is no evidence that Mande smithing fed into European alchemy. That is a different claim from the Zosimos line, and it is not one the record supports. The Egyptian thread rests on documents and dates. The furnace tradition rests on archaeology and ethnography. Keep them apart and both survive scrutiny. Weld them together and a critic can kill both by attacking the weld.

Nigeria, Working From Its Own Ground

Two findings settle whether African metalwork needed a route through anywhere else.

The ninth-century bronzes of Igbo-Ukwu were cast from local Nigerian ore. Chikwendu and colleagues established the sources by chemical analysis in Archaeometry in 1989.

And at Igbo Olokun in Ile-Ife, glass was being made — not imported and remelted, but made. Abidemi Babalola, who excavated the site, sets out what the evidence shows, in his own words:

"Using chemical and physical analyses of the glass beads and glass production debris, the competing hypotheses of local primary glass production or re-melting of imported glass to create beads are explored in detail. Optical microscopic examination of the glass-encrusted crucibles in cross-section provides evidence for use in primary glass production rather than secondary re-melting of glass. The compositional analysis provides additional evidence for local sourcing of the raw materials for this glass. The large quantity of material recovered from a relatively small area suggests glass production on an industrial scale."

Glassmaking is chemistry. You are changing the nature of silica with heat and additives, and controlling the result. It was being done at Ile-Ife, from Nigerian materials, at industrial volume, in the first half of the second millennium.

And There Were Books

The claim that none of this was written down does not survive contact with the record.

The libraries of Timbuktu and the wider Sahara hold thousands of texts. They cover medicine, astrology, talismans and the uses of plants. These are the working subjects of the Arabic sciences. Alchemy sits among them.

Okasha El Daly has shown something sharper. Arabic-speaking scholars in Africa read and wrote about ancient Egypt for about a thousand years before European Egyptology began. Some of them worked on the hieroglyphs. Egypt was never lost. It was read all along, in Africa, in Arabic — until a later European scholarship declared itself the discoverer of something that had never stopped being studied.

The Question Itself Is Loaded

The Congolese philosopher V. Y. Mudimbe made a point worth holding on to. The categories we use to ask about Africa were built elsewhere, for other ends. "Did Africa have alchemy?" measures Africa against a European template. It quietly promises the answer no.

The Beninese philosopher Paulin Hountondji adds the other half of the discipline. He attacks what he calls ethnophilosophy — the habit of presenting a collective traditional worldview as though it were philosophy. Applied here, it means we do not write "Africans believed" anything. We name a person and an argument. Zosimos wrote this. Ibn Khaldūn argued that. Diop presented this, and Vercoutter conceded that. Babalola excavated these crucibles.

So the better question is not whether Africa had alchemy. It is what Africa knew about changing a substance and a person, and how that knowledge was held.

The answer is specific, and it is in four places. In the oldest alchemical text we possess, written at Akhmim. In a fourteenth-century refutation written at Tunis. In the furnace, across the continent, governed by rules about who may approach it. And in the crucibles at Ile-Ife.

Did Greek philosophers really study in Egypt?

The ancient Greeks said so themselves, repeatedly and by name. Herodotus wrote that the names of the gods and the forms of worship came to Greece from Egypt. Diodorus, citing Egyptian priestly records, lists Orpheus, Homer, Solon, Plato, Pythagoras, Eudoxus, Democritus and others, and itemises what each took — including Pythagoras's geometry, number theory and doctrine of the soul. Modern historians debate how much is biography and how much later prestige; either way, Egypt is the senior partner on the Greeks' own testimony.

Did Africa have alchemy outside Egypt?

If alchemy means transforming a substance by fire, under ritual rules, by a specialist the work is thought to endanger, then yes — widely, and long before the European texts. What Africa does not have outside Egypt is a European-style library of alchemical manuscripts. Those are two different questions, and only the second has ever been answered no.

Did African iron smelting influence European alchemy?

There is no evidence for that, and this article does not claim it. It is a separate question from the Egyptian line, which rests on documents and dates. The furnace tradition stands on archaeology and ethnography and does not need a transmission claim to be significant. Keeping the two apart is what allows both to survive scrutiny.
