You pull into the driveway and sit there for a minute, engine off, not quite ready to go inside. Some part of you is still in the meeting. Still rehearsing the email you didn't send. Still held by the day. This isn't weakness or poor time management. It's your brain doing exactly what it was built to do — and there's a two-minute intervention that can change it, reliably, if you do it in the same way, every day.
Why the Brain Carries Work Across the Threshold
Before going further. Nigredo, and every other frame in this article, is a way of describing an experience. It is not a diagnosis and it cannot tell you whether you are unwell. Depression is a medical condition and it responds to treatment. If you are not sleeping or eating, if you cannot function, if this has lasted weeks, or if you are having thoughts of harming yourself, that is a reason to speak to a doctor now rather than to read on. Working with a therapist alongside this material is not a failure of the process. It is often what makes the process survivable.
Your brain organises memory and attention by context. When you spend eight hours in a particular mental state — alert, performing, monitoring for threat — the brain encodes that state alongside everything in the environment: the screen, the office noise, even the drive itself. This is called context-dependent memory, and researchers have studied it since at least the 1970s. The environment and the mental state get wired together.
The problem is that stress doesn't stay in the office when the context bleeds. If your commute is spent reviewing the day's failures, the car becomes part of the work context. Your kitchen eventually joins it. The brain doesn't register that you've crossed a threshold unless something gives it a clear, repeated signal that the context has changed.
Godden and Baddeley (1975) showed that people recall information more accurately in the same environment where they learned it. Their research, conducted with deep-sea divers learning word lists on land and underwater, demonstrated that context acts as a retrieval cue. The same mechanism applies to emotional states: the mental context of work can be involuntarily reactivated by contextual cues tied to it — including the drive home itself.
This is why the commute feels like an extension of work rather than a release from it. You haven't signalled to your brain that the context has ended. You're still inside it.
What a Real Transition Cue Does
The solution isn't to think about work less. Suppression makes it worse — researchers call this the rebound effect, where trying not to think about something increases its frequency. The solution is to give the brain a consistent signal that one context has closed and another has opened.

The research basis for this is stronger than it sounds. A 2014 study by Norton and Gino found that rituals performed before or after an emotionally charged task reduced feelings of grief and anxiety. The effect wasn't explained by distraction. It was explained by the sense of order and control the ritual itself provided.
The car, parked in the driveway or a garage, is almost perfectly suited for this. It's a liminal space — between the two worlds, belonging to neither. Two minutes, engine off, is enough. You don't need more time. You need specificity and repetition.
The Routine Itself
Park. Turn the engine off. Don't reach for your phone.
First: three slow breaths. Not a meditation — just three breaths slow enough that your exhale is longer than your inhale. This activates the parasympathetic nervous system (the part of your nervous system that slows your heart rate and lowers alertness). One minute, maybe less.
Second: say one sentence out loud, or in your head. Something like: "That's done. I'm done with it for today." The specificity matters. Research on "psychological detachment from work" — studied extensively by Sabine Sonnentag — shows that mentally completing the day predicts better sleep and lower emotional exhaustion the following morning. A spoken or thought declaration functions as a completion signal. Not magic. Just how the brain closes open loops.

Third: one deliberate action that belongs only to home. Change the music. Step out of the car. Notice the temperature of the air. It doesn't matter what it is. It matters that it's consistent, and that it belongs to this side of the threshold. Over weeks, this cue becomes a conditioned signal. The brain learns to associate it with the end of the work context.
That's the whole routine. It takes under two minutes. The hard part isn't the steps — it's doing them every day before the phone comes out.
Why It Works Over Time
The brain's ability to physically change in response to repeated experience is called neuroplasticity. When you repeat this sequence daily, the neural pathways associated with "work is over" grow stronger. Context switching becomes easier because the brain has a well-worn track for it.
This connects to something larger about identity under pressure. If you're going through burnout, a career change, or any sustained period where the self feels depleted, the bleed between contexts isn't just inconvenient — it's erosive. You never fully arrive anywhere. You're always partly somewhere else. That chronic half-presence is one of the quieter symptoms of the kind of collapse that precedes real change.
The routine doesn't solve the burnout. But it interrupts the mechanism that makes it worse. It gives you back the hour after work — which, compounded across months, is significant. Sonnentag and Fritz (2007) found that psychological detachment from work during off-hours was one of the strongest predictors of long-term wellbeing, more predictive than leisure activity alone. The activity matters less than whether the brain registers it as genuinely separate from work.
This is also why people who work from home often feel the most eroded. Without a physical commute to serve as a container for the transition, the contexts collapse entirely. If that's you, the same routine works — a walk around the block, a deliberate change of clothing, two minutes in a chair before you re-enter the shared space of your home. The car is a metaphor. What you actually need is the boundary.
There's a reason humans have always marked transitions with small rituals — the closing of a book, the washing of hands, the changing of clothes. These aren't superstitions. They're technologies for telling the brain: this part is finished. They work now for the same reason they always worked. The brain is still listening for the signal. You just have to give it one.
